Rammstein "Deutschland" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

  • The Charismatic Voice

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED: This video contains graphic images, strong themes and historical content regarding Germany's tumultuous past. If you have a squeamish stomach, skip this analysis of "Deutschland" by Rammstein.

I was very nervous to jump into this pond, having heard Rammstein as a youngling and not understanding or respecting Till Lindemann's vocals. Boy was I wrong. This song was so deep and constricting which tore my insides to shreds. . . there's so much emotion laced within. Everyone can thank our Patrons who watched this video and gave me the thumbs up that it should be posted.

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Rammstein for the first time, performing "Deutschland”.

This is no monk chanting. These days there were no monks in Germany. They were "Heiden" as all German tribes, Vikings, Celtics etc were before christianization. Ich suggest to Listen to ancient sounds of modern bands who do historical researches for their music and grew up in an old tradition like Eivør, a singer from Färöer Islands or Heilung who really did professional historical researches about texts, instruments, costumes and rituals from tribes from lower arctic circle down to Germany. And they found out that this kind of deep singing, throat singing, drums, pipes and percussion instruments and tools, even human bones, are used in all tribes around this subpolar circle on the northern hemisphere. In Siberia, Alaska and Canada, Skandinavia and rest of Northern Europe. So, no monks. 😉 A Fan of Heilung made a bone of her arm as a present after her death. The band got it and even use it as an instrument for composing songs but not on stage. It was the wish of this woman who was also very interested in Northern history and loved this crossover from ancient music and original texts from more than 3000 years ago with heavy metal. The male singer is a German living in Kopenhagen and he is awesome in throat singing. The female singer is Danish. Most of the band menbers are from Norway. They are all living with this Nordic culture. Like me. I live close to the Danish border in a part of Germany with also Danish traditions. I grew up between these huge long stone graves Just five minutes from Haithabu (hejðabyr), which was one of the most important Viking cities. We celebrate midsommar, jul and ostàra instead of Christian days. Although we also believe in God. Going home to God is better to sit in front of valhalla because not everyone is a warrior. Much better that way. So these old roots still live on in people. And you also know lots of these traditions, for example the christmas tree which gives hope for a new year to come because it stays green in spite of the ice and snow. Or maybe you know Barbara day in december (4th) on which you cut a branch of a cherry tree and when it blews on Jul a new spring will come. 13 is nö reason for fear because the 13th full moon is the beginning of a new circle of life. And people were afraid of their Gods will give it to them or let them all die in an eternal winter. So there is a need to know by Our roots deep in us to understand this song better. By the way... A very popular and great fan of Rammstein is Katharina Wagner. Maybe you know her from your own profession. She is a popular opera regisseuse, the head of Wagner hat in Bayreuth / Germany, the great-grand-daughter of Richard Wagner and the greaf-great-grand-daughter of Franz Liszt. She said that she loves the professional composing, the complex structure of their music, the poetry in their texts, Till's singing, the touching of the deepest taboos of a humans darkest side which everyone tries to hide and to deny and the, as she said, "plakative Inszenierung wie eine Wagner-Oper!", which means that the scenes in their concerts are energized and offensive as an opera of her great-grand-dad. She said He would love Rammstein if he would live today.

You are very right in the lyrics being very poetic, Till Linderman (the singer) is known for his great poetic lyrics and have even published books of poetry. As for explanations on his accent and way of singing I highly recommend VlogDave's videos about it, he has a series of videos about different Rammstein songs and other topics related to the band.

Just so you know the part from "Deutschland, Deutschland über allen" is a kind of banned verse of the old german anthem- known as the "Deutschlandlied" or "Das Lied der Deutschen" (The song of Germany). It is "banned" because this verse was sung by the National Socialists in WW2. This verse was the first of three. Nowadays, because of the connection between the text and the National Socialists this verse isn't the anthem anymore. The third verse of this song is the actual anthem of Germany you might have heard at the football world cup ("Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit...")

Germany doesn't have a darker past than USSR/Russia, which the allied collaborated with before the Nazi mass killings began. Stalin was already a hardened slaughterer with absolute terror over his people. Think of North Korea today and you will understand who Stalin and the communists were. I hate Nazis, but this double standard has to stop. This "troubled" history applies more to Russia and China, but also the Western allies who kept this unphatomable terror regime in power for geopolitical reasons, not humanitarian.

I'm astonished by how Till's elocution allows me to get almost every word (and a lot I don't have the sense BTW) with my poor two years of German courses at high school 40 years ago. It's certainly a great part of Rammstein's appeal to people who don't speak German : being able to reproduce the lyrics phonetically even without getting any of it.

@TheCharismaticVoice: If you are interested in that "Sprechstimme" ("speak-singing") technique, you HAVE to listen to "Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt, Piano Version". That is a very theatrical and slow version of an old song by Rammstein, where Till (the singer) used an incredible musical/opera style of singing/speaking/whispering. Incredibly interesting from a vocalist perspective. And several points in the song show that in a parallel universe, Till definitely is an accomplished opera singer. ;)

13:30 Deutschland Deutschland uber allen is the chorus of the national anthem. Deutschland Deutschland uber allen, uber allen in die welt. Originally meaning a unity of the German states in brotherhood and freedom. Unfortunately it has gotten a bit of a foul nationalistic taste in the 30’s and 40’s. So its another example of the controversy that the song discribes. I am part of the identity of the country, but I can’t love that country fully, because of the very long and often not so positive history. Which is applicable to almost all nations, if we are being honest.

Being French and not too young German was my second language assignment in school. I was not that bad but I've never understood declinations, which sucks. Ancient Greek, Russian, German are languages which escape me, BUT Rammstein interested me again in German from their first album. And yes the song nis as always very interesting, especially since it was their "comeback" album and the text is just UMGLAUBLICH. BTW I gathered you're a classically trained singer which explains how you get German. Do you also speak Italian, just out of "curioscita" ?

The way Till trills the 'r' from uber into allen feels simultaneously plaintive and accusatory. I find that there is consistently a theatricality to his delivery and it always feels measured and deliberate. Truly one of my favourite vocalists. Edit: I re-watched the sequence and the (I think) semi-tone drop from 'a' to 'llen is also critical to the mood.

Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.

The imagery was done on purpose to draw attention to how different ideologies are held by leaders and not the people as a whole. It also shines a light on how violent Germany’s past has been, and why Germany feels bad for some of its past actions and righteousness towards other parts of its history.

It's really interesting to see an american react to a song that is so deeply and emotionaly rooted in german history. Even the music video, for me as a german was immediately clear in the first few scenes - I saw romans and germanic tribal people, I saw Nazis and the Hindenburg crashing, I saw boxers from the time of the Weimar republic, I saw armor from the time of the crusades and I instinctly knew this story would be about german history from the good to the bad and everything in between. It's a special kind of "pucker factor" if you start to listen/watch a song about german history from a band that is known for their agressive and unappologetic language. To then hear them confess their love for germany and their anger at everything that means is just... indescribable. But obviously for an american none of this has the same meaning, you probably don't even understand the lyrics and evidently were confused by the mixture of visuals from different periods of time. That you still got the general vibe and emotion from the song is a testiment to the careful and, frankly, genius way Rammstein construct their music. I'm not a big fan of their style and don't listen to them often, but it is undeniable that they are genius writers and performers. [Edit: Commented to early, sorry. You did translate the lyrics later on.]

A fantastic viewpoint coming from a singer, this I havent found online until now. Instant sub. This video is epic in every way shape and form, truly the magnus opus of this band. There are so many easter eggs to be found, from the clergy eating off of Germany to Germania being depicted as a beautiful black woman to the birth of the dog breed that was almost made extinct through two world wars...I could go on an on and on. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to future content.

All legit German men Scandinavian or German a deep voice like this even Deutsch-Amerikaner that only know American English. it's only less detectable native English speaking that is all or mostly German ancestry.

To be precise the genre is called "Neue Deutsche Härte" (new german hardness), which is closer to rock than metal I suppose. Not really folk music tho...

18:05 " it feel very much like poetry " ... ...as a german ( cliche of comment section are invaded by germans fullfilled ) ...i read worse poetry than listening to any rammstein song . Most of the times you´ve been caught by the lyrics much more than the music . ...the whole world of rammstein is meaningfull deep thoughts , some provoke , some are plain dark , some twisted wordplays .....no easy peasy stuff . i am pretty sure that you are familiar with the " du hast " lyrics ..... but each an every line has a second meaning in german slightly different pronounced if you just has the single line . short example : Du ( you ) Du hast ( you have ......or ..you hate ? ..same pronounciation ) Du hast mich ( you have me ( does not work well in english grammatics ) but can be also " you hate me " Du hast mich gefragt ( you have asked me ) Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab' nichts gesagt ( you have asked me and i did not response ) Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet ( are you willing till death tear you apart ) scheidet is also used later in the song as scheide ......which means vagina .. Treu ihr sein für alle Tage ( to be true for ever ) Nein ( No ) so is it about hate after a proposal from her to him that went wrong ?. the lyrics of "ohne dich " is like 19th century writings in its words ...etc

That translation, from "Andy", is not right. Just as an example, Übergeben means to puke, to be sick. But the others are not right either. :-( But you will not listen to me I guess. But if you ever need some German/ English translations, let me know. But don't use Andy again, he is crap ;-)

wow,I remember that song and the video making big waves here in Germany. Probably thanks to the gross yet in a bizarre way beautiful imagery. Personally, I sat in history class and heard about the world war 1 and 2 times probably every year in school from grade 6 onward. It's still a HUGE deal in Germany even though some people to to desperately sweep it under the rug and forget it. I can understand parts of it, Germany moved long past those world war 2 times but racism is still an issue here and Rammstein really showed some people that taking pride in being german isn't the accomplishment they think it is

'Germania', was literally one territory the Romans never could conquer. In fact, they lost two Legions there, and that defeat convinced them trying to occupy that region simply wasn't worth the fight/investment. This history was a huge contributor to modern Germany's negative roots with WWI/II. A sense of invincibility, in spite of other (dire) political/societal agendas. (Yes, they were quite wrong about that) Rammstein captures this courage and heritage of the Germanic People's, very, very well!
